White County Detectives Investigating Potential Phone Scams
Detectives with the White County Sheriff’s Department are investigating miscellaneous calls from unknown parties in Puerto Rico and / other overseas locations where the unknown Suspect will say something to the effect of; “your family member has been in an accident and needs funds now…” or “your family member has been kidnapped…” Then Suspect(s) would demand for victim to give an account number and / or wire money, (Western Union; etc.), to another account number to keep from further harm coming to the family member. These calls are designed to “scam” you out money.
The White County Sheriff’s Department is advising citizens to beware of these types of calls and be cautious about cooperating with anyone and / or any organization, (including charity), that you do not recognize or would demand account number information. Never release or volunteer personal information, (date of birth, social security, bank account; etc.), to anyone you do not recognize. Legitimate organizations should have another way of making a payment; such as through a secure web site... But again, you must be vigilant in insuring you are dealing with a reputable business… Good “rule of thumb” is; if it seems strange / suspicious; it probably is…
If anyone feels they have been a victim of a scam, they need to call the White County Sheriff’s Department at (501) 279-6241 to report the incident. Anyone requiring further information about how to protect yourself from potential scams is also encouraged to call the White County Sheriff’s Department.
